How do you know if something in BDSM is a real punishment or just playful fun? It might seem like a small thing, but mixing the two can lead to hurt feelings, mixed signals, and even resentment. And I get it, you might be thinking, does it really matter if it's all consensual? Yes, it absolutely does, and I will tell you why. I'm Alessandra from Dom Subliving, and in this episode, we're diving deep into how to tell the difference between punishment and play. So your dynamic stays clear, connected, and fulfilling. Let's get into it. Welcome to the Dom Subliving Podcast. Before we get into all the kinky goodness, definitely grab my free list of 30 different punishments at DomSubliving.com slash punish. But what exactly is the difference between a punishment and just play? A lot of times you'll hear different educators like myself talk about play as also funishment. Um, that's just kind of like a play on words. But so we're gonna be talking about punishment and play or funishments. And so why does the difference knowing the difference between the two, why does that even matter? Well, it's important for one reason because if you don't know the difference, a lot of misunderstandings can happen. If one person goes into a scene or even something like a spanking, expecting it to be maybe just a funishment or just some kind of you know playful fun, but the other partner is going into it thinking this is going to be a hard corporal punishment, then you can have a lot of hurt feelings, misunderstandings. And I have unfortunately been there too. In the beginning of our journey, there were a couple of times I remember where you know I was thinking a scene was gonna go a certain way, that it was gonna be light and playful, and my Dom had a different idea in mind. So in the beginning, a lot of times we weren't on the same page, so a lot of misunderstandings can happen. So knowing the difference just really prevents a lot of confusion in your roles and different opinions and expectations. But when you are on the same page and you know these differences, it can really strengthen your communication and it can build trust in the dynamic. And I get a lot of questions about well, what exactly is a punishment and what is funishment? Like what are the key differences? So let's take punishment first. So the goal of a punishment is usually to correct behavior and it can also enforce boundaries and it can address any rule breaking that has been happening on the part of the submissive. So, for example, if a sub breaks a protocol like not completing a task on time or not responding to a text message in a timely manner, which I have been guilty of doing that. But so in those kind of instances, maybe some kind of corporal or physical punishment might be called for, um, depending on the severity of whatever protocol was broken. But always the dominant wants to do it in a controlled and calm way. And in terms of the emotional impact with a punishment, these are usually more uncomfortable, more physically uncomfortable, but they do help to restore that balance in the dynamic. And then with function or these playful punishments. So the goal of these is for the dominant to show more of their playful dominance. Um, it's more about connection or stress relief, or even as a way to kind of flirt. Because these funishments are more of these kind of flirty BDSM acts that you may do just for pleasure. So you might use something like a flogger in more of a playful, pleasurable way instead of you know, very, very hard and intense and painful, like you would with a punishment. So, again, the the tone of funishments, you want it to be light, you kind of want it to be humorous sometimes and affectionate too, is another way you can go about it. And a perfect example of how punishment can look so different from funishment and play is with maintenance spankings or punishment spankings, because I get this question all the time. Like, what is the difference between maintenance bankings and a punishment spanking? And I actually did a whole episode on this, the five things you need to know about maintenance bankings. So definitely search for that and you can learn all about maintenance bankings. But real quick, just to give you an overview of maintenance banking. So the goal of a maintenance banking is to reinforce roles, to maintain structure, and to really just prevent resentment from building up. And I'll give you a little personal experience about how maintenance bankings have um affected our dynamics. So there was a time where we were kind of skipping maintenance bankings. Um, for a few months, actually, we just kind of totally let it slip. And so little annoyances started piling up. We started bickering over little things more. I was becoming bratty over the simplest things, and my Dom was letting a lot of behavior slide. So um we brought maintenance bankings back into our dynamic and we started doing them on a weekly basis so they became more routine and everything totally reset after that. So it is just kind of one of those easy hacks to restore the balance in your dynamic. So if you haven't incorporated maintenance bankings, definitely go find that episode. Um, it's really, really insightful. But so how maintenance bankings contrast from a punishment spanking is a punishment spanking is more of a consequence for breaking a rule or breaking an agreement. So, for example, if your partner is supposed to check in before they leave the house and maybe they forgot, a punishment spanking can really address that behavior um more directly. And again, punishment spankings are usually more intense, they can be even painful, and you may even have a set number, um, something like 10 or 20 punishment spankings. And a lot of times, if you have a really sadistic DOM, they might have their submissive count them as they're getting their punishment spanking. Okay, so we talked about all of the differences between punishments and punishments and play. So, how do you set clear intentions before a scene so you know what you're getting into when you go into the scene? Well, you want to communicate your intention. So even before you start a scene, it really helps to say this is a playful spanking, not a punishment, or this spanking is to help you stay on track. And that is something that my Dom does before our maintenance bankings. He kind of gives me this lecture where he tells me you're not in trouble, but this is to make sure that you stay a good submissive because you have been a good submissive and we want it to stay that way. And definitely use verbal cues and safe words, obviously, and that way everything can stay clear to make sure that everyone is still on board with whether or not this is a punishment scene or a funishment scene. But some other examples of how you can set the intention during the scene. So if you're in the middle of a funishment scene and you notice that the energy is starting to shift. So one thing my DOM does is he might say something like, you know, just checking in, this is still feeling fun for you, right? Um, and that's just kind of a quick check-in. It doesn't have to kill the mood or anything, and it just makes sure, makes everything sure that we're we're both aligned. And then some other ways to avoid miscommunication during a scene or during a spanking. You can have a debrief after the scene to share what you both thought about it. Um, you can use humor to kind of signal whether or not this is a playful intention. Um, you can use stern words or a certain um honorific if it's more of a punishment. Um, for example, if things are more severe and more of a punishment, I might call my dom sir in those instances. But if it's more playful, I might call him things like daddy. Um, so just do what works for you, but you may have other cues, like you can just use the word playtime or consequence if you're switching up things really um, you know, often during a scene. But it's totally up to you how you want to set those intentions. And if you're a DOM subtraining member, don't forget that we have scene creation worksheets inside the course. So that way you can use those two for setting your scenes. So we covered how to set clear intentions during your funishment or punishment scene, but let's move on to what are the red flags? So, what happens when punishment and play kind of gets blurred? Well, some common pitfalls I've seen in my students when they're creating their scenes is just having mixed signals where maybe the submissive feels punished in what they thought was supposed to be a playful scene. Another pitfall is emotional fallout, where there's just unclear intentions, and that just leaves both partners feeling misunderstood. And then the third pitfall I see couples do is believe it or not, I see sometimes what happens is overusing funishments where they rely too much on playful scenes without addressing real issues that are coming up in the dynamic and addressing patterns that they see. And that actually happened between me and my Dom, and we had to have a tough conversation about that because we were starting to use funishments too often instead of having real consequences for me, because it was kind of an easier way to do it to just rely on maintenance bankings, but um, it kind of just left me feeling like my Dom wasn't taking our dynamics seriously or taking his role seriously. So we had that difficult conversation. And so now we have a healthy mix of both punishment and punishments. Because be honest with yourself, have you ever used play as a way to avoid having difficult conversations with your partner? You don't want to get into that habit. So we talked about the red flags to look out for, but now how do you know when to use a punishment versus when to use play or a funishment? So when to use punishment. So if rules have been broken or boundaries have been disrespected, that's when you want to use a punishment because again, the goal is to restore trust or to correct behavior. And then when you want to do play or funishment, that is usually to connect and bond in a low pressure way. And when you focus on the joy and the humor or stress relief, then that is more of a funishment. So you may be thinking, well, how do I find the right balance? So one easy way is just to alternate between a playful scene and a serious one. That way you can kind of keep the dynamic fresh. That really helps both partners to really kind of have to think on their toes and mix things up. And so one weekend you might do more of a punishment hardcore scene. And then the next weekend you might do more of a funishment scene. And that's kind of what we do in our dynamic. We love doing a playful scene after a heavier, more intense punishment scene because it just really helps to lighten the mood and restore that connection and be like, we still love each other, like we still like each other, right? That was just so much intensity and way over the top what we did last weekend, but we're still good, right? So that's just a way to kind of alternate. Um, so and it it kind of gives us each what we both like too. If you just did it one way all of the time, it would be kind of like having the same dessert all the time. So it's just a way to mix it up. Um, so because sometimes I be might be craving more of a punishment. And then so the next weekend we can do more of a funishment so we don't get hanged up on just one or the other. So really take the time to think about it. Does your dynamic lean more towards punishment or play? And ask yourself, is that working for both of you? But whether it's punishment or play, the key is intention and communication. And knowing the difference and when to use each keeps your scenes aligned, fun, and connected. And I'd love to know what's your experience with punishment versus play? Which do you enjoy more?
