Hey, it's Alessandra from Doms of Living, and I've been in the BDSM lifestyle for over 10 years now. So a very long time. I've been teaching it, coaching it, and living as a submissive 24-7. Today I'm here to give you 50 game-changing BDSM tips in 15 minutes. Let's go! Welcome to the Dom Sub Living Podcast. Let's begin with tips for the foundations of BDSM. To start off, number one is know your why. BDSM isn't just about play, it's about connection, power exchange, and trust. So define what you truly want from it. And that way when things get hard, you know why you're doing this. Number two, kink isn't always sexual. Some people engage in BDSM purely for the power exchange or the emotional connection or sensory experiences. It doesn't have to be about sex, but if you want to include that, that's totally fine too. And number three, we have the flip side of that, that BDSM can be emotional. It's not always physical. Power exchange is about trust, vulnerability, and physical connection too. And number four, you don't have to play in a dungeon to be a real BDSM player. There's Bedroom Kink, 24-7 DS, casual impact play. It's all valid and your BDSM journey is yours to define. And number five, there's no one right way to do BDSM. What matters is that you and your partner feel safe, satisfied, and fulfilled. So don't get hung up on what other people are doing. You have to make this your own. Now let's talk about tips for communication, consent, and negotiation. And number six, communication is key. If you can't talk openly about desires, limits, and boundaries, you're setting yourself up for failure. So make sure you communicate with your partner. You can do check-ins, you can do journaling, whatever works for you. And number seven, negotiation isn't optional. Scenes, relationships, protocols, everything should be agreed upon beforehand. And you can do this with something simple like a contract. And I even have a free one for you at domsubliving.com/slash contract. And speaking of negotiation, number eight, kink negotiation should cover what if scenarios. So what happens if the rope gets too tight? What if the submissive panics? So discuss these possibilities before you start playing. And number nine, soft limits exist for a reason. A lot of times we think about hard limits, but there's soft limits too. So just because you might be open to something though, doesn't mean you have to do it. So have your soft limits also. And number 10, safe words are a non-negotiable. So in our dynamic, for us, red means stop and yellow means slow down. But make sure you and your partner understand the safe words that you are using. And number 11, consent and safe words are not just for the submissive. Dominants have the right to say no to things that they don't want to do too. So, DOMS, you can have safe words as well. Let's move on to tips for dynamics and power exchange. 12. Submission doesn't mean automatic obedience. So a good submissive follows their dominant because of trust and respect, not because they're a doormat or they're a pushover or they're just being a robot. 13. Being dominant is about responsibility, not power trips. Good dominance prioritize their submissive well-being over their own ego. And 14 is kind of a controversial one, but dominance needs training too. So being a good Dom isn't just about confidence, it requires actual skills, emotional intelligence, and learning from experienced mentors. And 15 is for my brats out there, bratting isn't the same as being disrespectful. Playful defiance is different from outright disobedience. So know the line, but know that bratting can be totally okay if both partners are consenting. 16, respect is earned, not demanded. So no one is automatically a dominant just because they say so. They have to really prove themselves. 17, titles should be earned. You don't become a dom or a sub or a daddy or a little girl overnight. You need experience, learning, and growth. All of those things really matter. 18. Protocols can be fun, not just serious. So simple rituals like a morning greeting or kneeling before bed, those things can really strengthen your dynamic over time. And 19, contracts aren't legally binding, but they're super useful. So writing things down helps set clear expectations. And again, I have that free one at domsubliving.com/slash contract. Number 20 is another controversial one, but you don't have to be 24-7 to be a real BDSM player. So your dynamic is valid whether it's full time or just in the bedroom. Now let's talk about tips for play and scenes. 21. Have a plan for your scenes, but be flexible. So know the structure that you're going to be doing, but be willing to adapt based on either mood, energy levels, or just even unexpected reactions. So have that plan, but be flexible. 22, start light with impact play. So go softer than you think you need to, especially if you're new to it. And that way you have room to progress and go harder. 23, marks don't define intensity. Some people bruise easily, like myself, some don't. Pain level isn't always visible. So remember that when you're playing. 24, check in during play. A simple color check, so red, yellow, or green can ensure that everyone is still having fun and on board with the scene. 25, humiliation isn't the same as degradation. So humiliation is playful embarrassment, while degradation can be more intense and psychological and is about lowering a person's status. So they're kind of similar, but know the difference. 26, no kink is superior. So there's leather, there's latex, rope, pet play. It's all valid as long as it's consensual and no one kink is more real than the other. 27. As much as I like to talk about cheap and do-it-yourself BDSM, DYII BDSM can be dangerous. So something like that. Kitchen rope, it's not the same as properly rated suspension rope. So always be careful. And to go along with that, 28, don't tie someone up unless you have scissors nearby. Emergency cutters should be within arm's reach in case of an issue that comes up. That is an extremely important rule. Let's move on to tips for punishments and discipline. 29. Punishments should be agreed upon in advance. So don't make up discipline on the fly because that can just lead to resentment and confusion. So have a plan and be consistent. Number 30, not all punishments have to be physical. There's mental or service-based punishments. So things like writing lines, standing in the corner, or losing privileges, those can be just as effective as physical punishments. Now let's talk about tips for emotional well-being and aftercare. 31. Scene drop is real. The emotional crash after a scene can hit hard. So plan for it. And 32, drop can happen even after amazing scenes. Even if a scene goes perfectly, emotional drop can still hit hours or days later. It's happened to me. So have a plan to handle it. 33, dominance can need aftercare too. Topping can be just as emotionally draining as bottoming. So don't neglect dominance aftercare. 34, submissives should practice self-care too. It's easy to get caught up in pleasing your Dom. I've been there, but don't forget to take care of yourself outside of your dynamic. And that way you can be a better submissive for your partner too. Let's talk about tips for safety and personal responsibility. 35, vet your partners. Just because someone calls themselves sir or master doesn't mean they're a safe partner. So make sure you vet them. In 36, vetting isn't just for submissive. So dominant should also vet potential subs. Just because someone calls themselves a good sub doesn't mean they actually understand the role of submission. In 37, BDSM should never be used to fix a relationship. If you have problems outside of kink, BDSM won't magically fix them and sometimes it can even make them worse. In 38, trust your gut. If something feels off about a person or a scene or something you do, listen to that instinct. And 39, don't assume everyone is into your kinks. Just because you love something doesn't mean others do. So respect boundaries. This goes for when you're going to different clubs and events, too. Here's some of my best tips for long-term growth and mindset. And 40, limits can change over time. What you once considered a hard no may become a curiosity, and that's okay. Just make sure it's your choice and not pressure coming from a partner. 41, sub-frenzy is real. I remember this. When you're new, it's easy to want to do everything. So definitely pace yourself and go slow. 42, Dom frenzy is real too. So dominance can get caught up in the role and all the different fun things they're learning. So just like with submissives, pace yourself and be patient. 43 is experience doesn't equal expertise. Someone being in the lifestyle for 20 years doesn't mean they're good at it. You still need to take everything they're saying with a grain of salt and let them prove themselves. 44, you don't have to be monogamous, but you don't have to be polyamorous either. BDSM and polyamory do often overlap, but they are not the same thing. 45, find a BDSM mentor or safe community you can be a part of. Having a knowledgeable mentor or a vetted BDSM community can really help you navigate this lifestyle safely and confidently. 46, stop gatekeeping. There is no right way to do BDSM as long as you're being safe and consensual. So don't gatekeep others, but be open so they can experience this lifestyle too. 47, don't compare your journey to others. Your dynamic, your kinks, and your preferences are valid, whether they're common or whether they're rare. So remember that BDSM isn't a competition. This is a journey that you're doing at your own pace. 48, avoid being stagnant and avoid the vanilla rut. Even long-term dynamics need fresh energy, new experiences, and evolving protocols to stay fulfilling and engaging. 49, have fun. BDSM is about connection, exploration, and pleasure. And if you're not enjoying it, something needs adjusting. And 50, never stop learning. BDSM is an ever-evolving journey, so keep educating yourself, whether it's through books, workshops, courses, or podcasts like this one. The more you learn, the deeper and more fulfilling your experiences will be.
