I'll be honest, when I first started exploring BDSM and polyamory together, I made some huge mistakes. I thought I could just figure it out as I went, and let's just say things got complicated fast. Power struggles, miscommunication, jealous partners, some familiar? If you're juggling multiple DS relationships and want to avoid my mistakes, stick around. I'm Alessandra from Dom Subliving, and today I'm giving you the exact roadmap to make BDSM and polyamory work without the mess. Welcome to the Dom Subliving podcast. Do you ever feel like balancing BDSM and polyamory is a juggling act where one wrong move sends everything crashing down? A lot of people struggle with this, and there's a lot of common fears that I know I've had too, where you may think, well, what if my dynamics start clashing? How do I make sure no one feels neglected? And can you really maintain a power exchange with multiple partners without a bunch of chaos? Well, I'm here to help. By the end of this episode, you'll have five clear roles to make your BDSM and polyamorous relationships work without the drama. Because I've been in this lifestyle for years and I've taught other people too. So I've seen what works and I've seen what leads to absolute disaster. So let's talk about the unique challenges of BDSM and polyamory. Because here's a hard truth. Just because someone is great in a DOM sub dynamic doesn't mean they'll automatically be great at handling multiple DS dynamics. BDSM and polyamory create extra complexity because power dynamics add an extra layer. So how do you decide who holds authority in which situation? And why so many people fail when they try to introduce polyamory into a DOM-sub dynamic is because they assume polyamory is just about love and freedom. But in BDSM, it's also about structure and discipline and expectations. So those things can be at odds. Because imagine trying to manage multiple relationships while also following rules, rituals, and expectations from different partners. Here's the good news: there are clear strategies that make this work smoothly, and I'm going to give you five of them. So the first role you need to follow is to define power structures clearly. Most BDSM polyamorous relationships start falling apart right here because no one actually clarifies who holds authority over what. So you have to define who has power in which areas. So for example, if a submissive has two dominants, is when they're primary, do they have equal power? Or if you have a polycule where one person is both a DOM and a sub, when do they switch roles? So you need to have everything clearly defined. Um, I knew a sub who did have two DOMs, and one wanted strict obedience and the other one wanted playful bratting. So without clear roles, it became a mess. So before you even think about adding partners, you need to ask, what are the power structures and do they actually work together? So the second rule is communication must be next level. Like you've heard that communication is key in BDSM, but in BDSM with polyamory, it's literally the life support of the dynamic. But polyamory and BDSM require different types of communication. So with polyamory, it's a lot about feelings and talking about agreements and boundaries. And with BDSM, it's more about, you know, what kind of protocols or authority or expectations. So going back to that example of the submissive with to dominance, do they have a shared communication system? Do the dominants communicate with each other? Those are some things you have to figure out. And one of my biggest tips for this is to avoid the he said, she said type of drama. So use a polyamorous and BDSM relationship contract. You can grab a contract for free at domsubliving.com/slash contract. You can have weekly check-ins too, because if you don't set up a solid communication system, someone is going to feel unseen, unheard, and underpowered. And then my third role is to avoid jealousy and power struggles, because let's be real, power struggles can kill polyamorous BDSM relationships pretty much faster than anything else. But I will say jealousy is a normal emotion. A lot of times people think something is wrong with the dynamic or wrong with them if they're feeling jealousy. But jealousy is just a normal emotion, just like anger or sadness. It can be viewed negatively and we want to minimize it. So that's what we're going to be talking about now. Because there are certain situations in a DOM sub dynamic that could lead to jealousy. And I've experienced that too. So the solution to all of this is to define equal but different roles rather than just trying to split the dynamic. So for example, one of my friends is a switch in a polycule, and she's a DOM to one partner and a sub to another, and actually a vanilla partner with a third. And their secret is each dynamic has its own space and container, and they talk about it constantly. So ask yourself, are you actually balancing dynamics or are you just trying to keep everyone from getting upset? Because that is a losing battle. But my fourth role is time management and aftercare across partners, because most people think BDSM relationships are all about scenes and kink, but what happens after the scene is just as important. So aftercare can get complicated in polyamory because a sub can have an intense scene with one DOM, but another partner also needs time with them. And then there's things like emotional exhaustion. So when you're juggling multiple power relationships, it can be mentally draining. So aftercare is so important to discuss. So some strategies to make this work. You can have staggered scene planning. So not overloading one partner with too much in one night, whether they're a DOM or a sub. And then maybe having shared or separate aftercare, whatever works for you, because some subs need aftercare from their scene partner only, and others need comfort from all partners. So you have to discuss these things. But a lot of polyamorous BDSM relationships fail because they don't realize how much emotional energy this all takes. So are you planning your aftercare like you plan your scenes? Um, that's definitely something to think about. So my fifth role, this is my favorite role, and I think it's the most important, but it's the no surprise role. So if you take one thing from this episode, let it be this. No surprises. So what this means is no surprise punishments from a second DOM, no secret rule changes that one partner doesn't know about, no new play partners or polyamorous agreements without a full discussion. So I'll give you a very personal example of this. So I was in a polyamorous relationship with another sub, and my dominant had the role of no marks from other people on my body. And one time me and this the other submissive were playing, and in the heat of the moment, I came home and realized I had a few hickeys on my body. And my Dom found out, and of course, he was upset because this was something we agreed upon. So we definitely had to discuss it. But after that, we have the no surprise role because the easiest way to wreck a BDSM polyamorous relationship is to keep secrets or expect people to just figure things out later. And so definitely no surprises. But if you're feeling overwhelmed from all of these rules, don't worry, these rules are here to make BDSM and polyamory work, not to complicate your life. So feel free to go back to them whenever you need to. But which of these rules do you struggle with the most? Drop a comment. I'd love to hear your experiences.
