You've probably heard of Total Power Exchange and thought it sounds extreme or even impossible. Well, I'm Alessandra from Dom Subliving, and today I'm breaking down the top 10 questions I get asked the most. Because the truth is, it's not what most people think. Welcome to the Dom Sub Living podcast. So, Total Power Exchange, or it's also called TPE, it's one of the most misunderstood terms in kink. It doesn't mean the dominant gets whatever they want at all times. It means both the Dom and the Sub agreed to define the terms. And there are still limits, boundaries, and safe words too. So total power exchange, it's not unconditional. It's negotiated. It's a type of Dom-sub relationship where the dominant partner holds full authority and the submissive partner gives their full surrender. It can be 24-7, but it doesn't have to be. It's more about structure, intention, and of course, ongoing consent. But it's not a one-size-fits-all type of dynamic. I've been in a TPE dynamic with my Dom, who's also my husband. We've been in it for about five years now. So today we're going to talk about real life challenges, like how to do TPE when you both work full-time, um, if switches can make it work, and even what happens when the dominant gets overwhelmed. Because yes, that definitely happens. And all of these questions came from my free community, which you can join at domsubliving.comslash community. It's where I hang out, I answer questions, and I do ask me anything from time to time. And I'll drop a link in the description too, so you can join. It's totally free. So our first question comes from Nancy. And she asked, How do you, as a sub, do TPE and not feel like a doormat and get your needs met in a respectful way? So this is hands down the number one fear I hear, especially from strong, independent subs. And honestly, I had the same fear too. I used to think that the more I gave, the more I'd lose myself, that I'd just become a robot. But then something shifted when I realized that submission doesn't mean I erase my identity. It means I'm choosing to submit. I'm not giving up my needs. I'm choosing to express them within our dynamic. So that might look like scheduled check-ins, having safe words that we actually use, and having regular check-ins where I'm encouraged to speak up and speak my mind. Submission isn't about being silent, it's about being heard in that container of the dynamic. But isn't it funny how people assume submission is weakness when a lot of times it takes way more strength than doing something like topping or being the dominant? But what if you are a Dom listening to this and you're worried your sub does feel like a doormat? What can you do then? Well, our next question is gonna go into that. So, question number two is from Steve, and he's actually one of our students in our Dom Sub training course. And he asked, Beyond just communication, what actions can and should a DOM take to help alleviate fears that a sub might have that TPE is just a way for the DOM to take advantage of the situation and have the sub do all the work. So, such a good question. So, first off, the why matters. Why does the dominant want TPE? It's all about their motivations. So is it about creating order? Is it about deepening intimacy? Because if it's just about convenience, that's that's kind of a red flag because subs aren't the DOM's parent. And actions matter too. I know DOMs who set up um monthly like reverse check-ins where the sub leads the conversation and shares what's working and what's not working. Um, other DOMs give their subs journal prompts to fill out weekly, and the DOM actually reads them. Um, my DOM does that. Um, some DOMs build in feedback protocols that are just as important as doing the scenes. Um, so for example, one student I had has their sub Neil wearing only their collar so that way they feel vulnerable and exposed, not just emotionally, but physically too. And when they're in that state, they have to share what their biggest struggles are as a sub and where they need help and guidance. Because here's the thing what's more powerful? A dominant who demands obedience or one who earns trust so deeply that obedience becomes almost like a gift. And later on in this episode, I'll actually talk about what TPE looks like when you're also raising kids and holding down careers, because yes, that also happens. But question number three, our next question. This is from Bevin, another Dom sub training student. And they ask, how do you avoid burning out your DOM? What does the DOM get out of the exchange as a sub? How can you suggest this type of relationship without topping from the bottom? So this is so real, especially in a 24-7 dynamic like me and my DOM have. And he also has ADHD too, on top of that. But DOMs can absolutely burn out if the sub is passive instead of proactive. But a healthy TPE is is mutual. Um, my Dom gets satisfaction, he gets structure, he gets a sense of purpose. He's not just directing me, he's leading something meaningful. Um, and here's one thing I try to do to help as a sub. So I like to ask him, would you like me to take something off your plate today or or this week? So it's not topping from the bottom, but it's to support him in his role. And then that way he's also in a better position to support me in my role. And if you want to introduce TPE into your relationship without being pushy, whether you're the Dom or the Sub, you can try something like saying, would you be open to exploring more structure together? Um, what would a deeper version of our dynamic look like to you? So make it about them. Always try to frame it for their benefit and not just complain and say things like, I wish you would do this, or you never do that. So definitely make it about them. But I get it, TPE can be a hard sell for some people. So our next question is about how to actually do TPE when you're working full-time with kids running around and you're just trying to keep your house from exploding. So, question number four is from Lisa, another Dom Sub training student, and she asks, How do you keep the TPE when you both work full-time and have older kids at home? It feels like bedroom only, but that isn't what we truly desire. So I hear this so often, and it's totally valid. So we've been living this lifestyle since our boys were toddlers, and now they're older teenage boys. But here's how to kind of reframe it. So TPE isn't about how much time you have, it's about the tone you set and the intention you set. And micro protocols definitely help. So maybe the sub text for permission before making plans, I do that a lot. Maybe the DOM gives out a to-do list to their some. Maybe it's more about the little things where the dinner is served with a yes, sir or a yes ma'am. I did a whole episode about how to live a Dom sub lifestyle when you have kids. So definitely check that out. But do your kids need to see kink or do they just need to see connection and consistency and care? Um, but it's totally possible to have a total power exchange relationship when you work, when you have kids. You just need to be creative and remember it's more of a mindset shift. So, question number five comes from Sharon, and she's another Dom Sub training student, and she asked a related question. So she asks, how do you keep your sanity when you work from home? Is there a boundary with TPE when it comes to work and work from home? Yes. Um, when you work from home like I do, you're the boss all day, and then you're expected to kneel by 6 p.m. or whatever. That can be kind of a head trip and it could be a whiplash. So what helped us was creating time blocks and transition rituals. Um, sometimes that means physically changing into a new outfit or a new room. Other times it's just me kind of kneeling on my own and saying, work is over. But even when I am working, I'm still a sub and my Dom has total power because we're in a total power exchange relationship. So if he needs my attention, I give it to him. Sometimes if I'm in the middle of something, I will say, you know, may I have 15 minutes, please, to wrap up what I'm doing and finish that. Um, I don't just, you know, hold up a finger and say, shh, not right now. Um, that wouldn't be very submissive of me. So having things like set work hours, um, deep work sessions where I can tell him ahead of time I'm going to be doing deep work for an hour. Um, so he knows like I'm kind of in the zone. Things like that have really helped both of us. Um he is a foreman for a construction company. So his work is super unpredictable. Um, sometimes he works nights and he's home during the day, or he's off completely if it's raining, which doesn't happen a lot here in LA. But some days are easier and we're both more focused and productive. He does do a lot from home working for Dom Sub Living. He edits every episode, but other days we do get distracted, and sometimes we just say, screw it, and have like an impromptu day-long scene, too. So that happens also. Um, but just remember in total power exchange, dominance and submission doesn't mean flipping a switch, it means embodying an identity. Um, so I hope that helped a little bit. Okay, question number six is from Tim, who is a member of our All Access Pass. Um, Tim asks, can you have TPE in all but one aspect of a relationship, like finances? So my answer is it depends. It depends on what you want your TPE dynamic to look like. TPE doesn't mean everything no matter what, it means intentional surrender. And the way we like to look at it is it's more like delegating. So, yes, my Dom may have total power over everything, but that doesn't mean he can't delegate some things to me. Um, and of course, he then has that power to take it back if he chooses. So, for example, is the sub better with money? Well, great, make it part of the dynamic. In our relationship, I do do the bills, but I still give my DOM like a financial review after I do it, which is like twice a month. And even though I pretty much have determined what our budget is, I still ask for permission before I make a purchase. So that's all TPE. So the key is transparency. And whether it's finances or other areas, having a contract can really help clarify those different areas without making either person kind of feel less real or that the sub is having to take over. And if you need a contract, we have a free template you can download at domsubliving.com/slash contract. So that's always there. But you can totally have the Dom delegate different areas to the sub because if TPE is about trust, then isn't knowing your strengths and your weaknesses part of that trust. But question number seven, um, we're moving on to Randall, and they asked, Is a strict structure with a large number of the rules and rituals 100% necessary for TPE, or can it run off a handful of rules and few, if any, rituals? So let me be clear, you do not need a military grade rule book for this to be valid. I know couples who are thriving with just maybe three rules, and others love to have something like 30. One high protocol sub I know actually asked for more rituals because it really just deepened her head space and made her feel more grounded. Um, but another couple had their only ritual just be asking for permission to get into bed. So it's whatever works for you. So, some questions to ask yourself. If you're the sub, what helps you feel owned? And if you're the Dom, what helps you feel in control? If you do need ideas and inspiration, you can get a list of real life protocols at DomSubliving.com slash protocols. But you do not want to have rules and protocols just for the sake of having rules and protocols. Um, or maybe because you hear you know me say that we do X, Y, and Z in R dynamic, and you thought, well, if Alessandra and her DOM do that, we should do that too. So again, like I've said before, TPE is a mindset where the DOM has total power. That doesn't mean the DOM has to tell the sub to breathe. And also it's your dynamic, and it is a dynamic. It should be ever evolving and changing over time as you grow and evolve as a couple and as individuals. So maybe you'll go through seasons of life where you have more protocols and more rituals, and maybe you'll have less, but that overall mindset of total power exchange is what stays there. Okay, question number eight. This is from Dan and Sarah, who are um Dom subtraining students. They asked, Does vanilla intimacy without scenes, power exchange, etc., have a place in TPE? So yes, yes, yes. DS doesn't cancel out intimacy. It it actually enhances it, I think. Um sometimes a DOM may just want to make love to their sub slowly, um, with no commands, no protocol, just being totally present. And that's still TPE because you're still in your roles. Um, and sometimes the the aftercare cudd can be the main event too that you're looking forward to. But intimacy isn't just for scenes, it can be for pleasure too. Um, sometimes it can just be mechanical and as a form of stress relief or regulation too. But all forms of consensual intimacy are valid in total power exchange because you still have that overreaching agreement and dynamic, if that makes sense. But hopefully that helped. Okay, question number nine is from Ollie, and they asked, How can you work toward this when both partners identify as switches but enjoy spending some time on either side of the slash? So switches can do TPE, it just takes clarity. So you might delegate roles by time, so like weekdays versus weekends, or um it can be based on the context. So home versus maybe play parties or inside the bedroom versus outside the bedroom. Um, one couple I know they kind of soft switch monthly on a schedule, and I know other couples that make decisions based on whatever energy and whatever they're needing in that moment that they're feeling. As long as there's some stable, you know, polarity, it works. Because let me put it this way does it matter who's in charge, or that just someone is in charge in that moment and holding that container? So, so that's one way to look at it. So we've made it to question 10, and this is from Wendy, a dom sub training student, and she asks, have you found the transition leads to more harsher discipline and correction, or vice versa? So this is such a good question. But in the beginning, from what I've seen from us and with our students and clients, yes, things tend to be more intense in that beginning because you're testing limits, you're building structure, and you're just really figuring each other out. It's new, and so you have this intense energy around it. But over time, most couples enter what I like to call this calibration phase where you don't need to correct as often because the roles are just kind of part of you now in the dynamic. In our dynamic, the the punishments have become different, not weaker, just more intentional. And we adapt. We're we're constantly changing. What I need discipline for one week might change the next week, but we're just kind of fine-tuning it as we go. I'm also a huge masochist. So my Dom started to see that taking away privileges actually worked better for me. But just the other day, he was saying, I don't think doing that is working anymore, and that we need to go back to these harder corporal punishments. And I just kind of thought, oh my God, because I hadn't had one of those types of punishments in a while. So I was kind of nervous, and that really just got me back on track really quick. So it definitely depends, but I think you'll see if you're doing total power exchange mindfully, that discipline is always changing. I may be more emotionally fragile and work better with rewards sometimes. Um, I will say there's a trap I see some couples get into where the DOM will say, Well, my sub is so disciplined now, I don't need to punish them. And and that always puts up alarm bells in my mind because just to be honest, it it kind of makes them sound lazy. Because imagine if you were a runner and you had a coach that says, Well, you do everything perfectly and you're always hitting your time coals. I don't need to set a training plan for you. Well, that coach probably isn't really challenging them enough, and they're not really doing their their job. They really need to push the runner and encourage them. And maybe that runner will fail from time to time, but they need to learn how to fail. So it's the same. With you know, power exchange too. A DOM needs to be a good coach and really see what their sub needs in different moments and adapt and to help them grow in this journey with them. But there's so much more to talk about when it comes to total power exchange relationships, like what happens when you disagree or when you even outgrow a dynamic. So I actually have a new step-by-step course coming out this week called the Power Exchange Blueprint. But for now, I want you to join our free community so you can take part in the next ask me anything that we do. And that way you can get your questions answered.
