People think you can't explore BDSM without a partner. And that's flat out wrong. In fact, some of the most confident dominance and submissives I know started solo. I'm Alessandra from Dom Sub Living, and today I'm going to show you exactly how to do it. Welcome to the Dom Sub Living podcast. Contrary to what you may have heard, you don't need a partner to start exploring BDSM. Because honestly, starting before you have a partner can be one of the smartest, most empowering things you do for your future dynamic. Now, I hear objections all the time, and maybe you even have said them yourself. Things like, but I'm married to a vanilla partner, but I'm single. But how can I practice with no one to practice with? If you've ever thought that, or if that's what's holding you back, you are not alone. And today I'm going to show you exactly how you can build your skills, confidence, and personal DS practice, even if you're totally single or in a vanilla relationship. Plus, I'm going to share some of the biggest mistakes beginners make when they wait for the perfect partner and how you can avoid them too. I'll even teach you how to actually meet a compatible partner when you are ready. And if you want to go deeper after this, I'll tell you how you can join my free Jumpstart Your BDSM journey bootcamp at dumbsubliving.com/slash bootcamp. It's a great next step, and I'll tell you more about that later on. But let me tell you a little story about me first. When I first got curious about kink, I wasn't even in a DS relationship yet. I wasn't in any relationship yet. And honestly, I thought I needed to find someone first. I kept thinking, once I have the right partner, then I can start exploring my desires. But what actually happened is one day I just decided I'm going to start exploring this for me. I started journaling, reading, experimenting with little things. And when I finally did meet my partner, who's now my husband and my dominant? Well, guess what? I was so much more confident. I was clear on what I wanted, and I was able to express my limits and my needs. And that gave me a huge advantage when we started discovering and practicing BDSM together. So why do so many people think they need to wait? And what if the real reason you haven't found the right partner yet is because you haven't explored what you want first. I've seen this so many times where DOMs who practice solo first are so much more prepared when the right sub comes along. And I've seen subs who build a confident, submissive identity first on their own, and they are so much able to easier attract the right Dom. So coming up, I'll show you how to build real skills and confidence before ever stepping into a scene or DS relationship. It is one of my favorite things to teach. But now let's talk about the biggest trap I see people fall into. And that is research mode or paralysis by analysis. You know what I mean. It's where you're watching endless YouTube videos where you're reading all the books, but not actually taking any steps. Or there's the perfectionism of it where you're telling yourself, well, once I'm ready, then I'll start. Or once I find a partner, then I'll start. I had um one student, she waited years, and by the time she finally did start, she regretted all the time she'd lost. So BDSM isn't about all the experience you have under your belt, it's a practice. Um, you don't have to be perfect, you just have to start. I always think of the be do have principle, if you've ever heard of it. But basically, the point is if you be a dom or sub and make that your identity first and do the actions a dom or sub does, then you get to have the things that a dom or sub has, like a partner. You attract those things through your identity that you embody and through your actions. But so many people get it backwards. They think in terms of have do be. They say, well, when I have a partner first, then I will do the things a dom or sub does, and then I will get to be a dom or sub at the end of it. But no, that that never happens. That's that's not how it works. It's be do have. So I'm going to walk you through the exact ways you can start today, even if your partner isn't interested, or if you're totally single too. So, how do you actually practice this without a partner? Well, let's start with submissive. So you can build your submissive headspace every single day. Have personal rituals, things like preparing coffee for yourself mindfully, or tea if you're a tea drinker, um, journaling your thoughts, practicing different postures, wearing a discrete token that reminds you of your submission. So, like a bracelet or a collar, um, setting intentions for service in daily life, using submissive journal prompts, volunteering to help others. Um, and then there's service to self. This is huge. When you practice service to yourself, you build the mindset and energy of submission that will naturally attract the right dynamic when the time does come. But now let's talk about dominance. So take this time to craft your DOM persona. Learn skills like rope, impact play, verbal control, practice self-command. So setting goals and following through with them, um, creating personal rituals that ground your dominant energy. My DOM likes to meditate, um, practice using your voice, your body language, build confidence. Now, if you're in a mixed relationship where you're in a dynamic to a vanilla partner, there are ways to gently introduce this DS energy. So things like personal rituals that are just for yourself, subtle shifts in how you even carry yourself, offering acts of service and noticing how the dynamic adapts and changes, and then just focusing on the energy between you, not the labels. One of my students in our All Excess Pass, they are married to a vanilla spouse, and he started using small rituals, um, interacting with his wife differently, just slowly introducing kink in the bedroom, um, using some of our tips in the program. And over time, his energy shifted, and his wife started noticing and responding. And they didn't need to label themselves as Dom sub. They just kind of started fitting into it naturally. Another client in our Alexis Pass that I mentor, she's a sub, and she started with just daily journaling and simple rituals. And when she finally met her Dom, they already had a strong foundation to build on because of all that. Um, we also had one dominant in the membership where he built his own solo practice for like three solid months. And by the time he met his sub, he was confident, clear, and an amazing communicator. So I've seen it happen all the time. So let me give you my personal rundown for exactly what to work on first. Here's what I recommend. So, number one, work on your mindset and beliefs. What do you believe about yourself as a sub or a DOM? Are there fears or shame that you need to work through? Journal about these things or meditate on them too. Um, you can even talk to a counselor about them. If you're an all access past member, you can definitely chat with me about it during our monthly private coaching times too. But number two is to learn the lifestyle. So this includes studying and personal reflection. So not just consuming information, but actually reflecting on it too. So think about what excites you about this lifestyle, what feels authentic about it. And then number three is daily rituals. So start with one small ritual you can do today. It could be something around coffee or your posture, um, writing, meditation, anything that grounds you. And then four is to work on core skills. So things like impact play, communication is a big one, setting protocols, negotiations, scenes. Again, if you're a member of our All Access Pass, you have access to a ton of different trainings on all those things. And then number five is embodied identity work. So this is all about how you move, how you speak, how you think, even. It's how you show up in your daily life as a DOM or sub, even if no one knows. So, what might your life look like if you start embodying this lifestyle now? How would the right partner respond to the new you? But now let's talk about why some of the best dominance and submissives I've ever met actually started without a partner and how you can too. Because I've seen this over and over again. Some of the best DOMs and subs I've ever met, when I when I asked them, they started single. And the reason why is because they had time to build confidence, get clear on their values and limits, develop real skills, and they avoid that trap of the, you know, where they think, I'll just take what I can get and settle, kind of a thing. Um, again, when I look back on my own journey, I'm so glad that I started doing even the little bit of research that I did and learning about kink on my own for a little bit before getting into a DS relationship. It saved me from so many beginner mistakes and bad potential relationships. But now I know you are probably wondering, okay, this this all sounds great, but what happens when I'm ready for more? What about finding an actual partner and staying safe? What should I actually be working on? So let's go through some of the top questions I get from DOMs and subs who are starting out solo. So the first question I constantly get asked is how do I actually meet a compatible partner when I'm ready? Well, start by getting super clear on your wants, your limits, and your values. That's actually what we do in my free bootcamp at domsubliving.com slash bootcamp. So definitely sign up for that. But then another thing you can do is show up in safe spaces. Um go to things like local munches, online groups like our boot camp, um, in-person events too, and take your time. You are not auditioning for anyone. You are looking for the right fit for you. And I always tell my students and clients that your goal is to make friends first. Just meet people that takes off so much pressure, and then you can explore whether or not someone would make a good partner for you. But if you're an All Access Pass member, you have a whole course on how to finally find your perfect partner that has helped hundreds of people to do just that. But then the second question I always get asked is how do I stay safe when looking for a DOM or sub, especially online? So, of course, watch for red flags, things like rushing, pushing your limits, secrecy, even. And then on the flip side, look for green flags. So transparency, patience, they're really consent focus. And then vet people, have multiple conversations with them, get references if you can. If they pressure you, that's your answer, and that's your sign to walk away. And then the third question I get asked a lot is how do I explain this lifestyle to my vanilla spouse or my vanilla partner? So start small, lead with emotions and say things like, you know, I've been exploring this and I'd love to share it with you. Frame it as an invitation, not a demand. Use simple language and avoid kinky jargon. So instead, you can say something like, I've been learning about ways we can connect more deeply. Can I tell you about it? So ask for consent and let your partner move at their own pace. Ask them what their needs and wants are and make it about them and what they would get out of this type of lifestyle. And then a lot of people ask me what are some good dominant or submissive skills I can work on while I'm solo? So dominant skills. This is communication, aftercare planning, negotiation, having a confident voice in body language, safety for impact, play, or bondage. And then submissive skills are things like mindfulness, um, anticipatory service, journaling, posture, etiquette. Remember, you're not just learning BDSM, you're becoming the DOM or sub you want to be and that your future partner would enjoy. And then another question I get asked are what are some examples of solo protocols, um, solo rituals or training ideas? So I already gave you a ton. Um, but my free jumpstart your BDSM journey bootcamp walks you through this step by step. Again, you can join for free at domsubliving.com slash bootcamp.
