#095 Does your dynamic feel off? If your Dom/sub relationship feels stuck or stale, this episode breaks down the 7 hidden habits that keep real D/s dynamics strong — for years. From rituals and contracts to community and mindset, this is what no one tells you.
There's a reason most Dom Sub relationships start hot and then fall apart. And it's not what you think. I'm Alexander from Domb Sub Living, and I'm going to show you seven things the strongest DS couples do that almost no one talks about. Once you know them, you'll never unsee them. Welcome to the Dom Sub Living podcast. If you've ever thought, why does our dynamic feel stale? Why don't I feel connected to my role anymore? Or even why did things feel so good at the beginning and now it's just off? Then this episode is for you. Now, I've had literally thousands of students over the years, so I've had this intimate bird's eye view into so many different dynamics. I've seen the ones that fall apart and the ones that last for years, sometimes even decades. And today I'm going to break down the seven hidden habits that those strong long-term DS relationships almost always have in common. Some of them are so simple you'll wonder why no one talks about them more. Some of them might challenge what you think a real power exchange should look like. And one of them, the one that completely changed my own dynamic, is probably the last thing you'd expect. I'll get to that in a bit, but let's start with the most common and most misunderstood habit. And that is they have regular scenes. The key word here is regular. So not fancy, not hours long, not even necessarily sexual, just regular. And by that I mean something intentional. It could be once a week, twice a month, even monthly. But the point is it's consistent, it's planned, it's a rhythm that they commit to. Because in real life dynamics, the the biggest threat isn't the drama, it's disconnection. Life gets busy, work piles up, kids get sick, and suddenly you haven't played in like three months, and that spark you once had starts to die out. Most couples wait until the mood is right, but in DS, we we make the mood happen. That's part of the commitment. I remember there was a time when my dom and I had been just so caught up in life. We were arguing, we were exhausted, we were totally misaligned. We hadn't done a scene in weeks. So he asked me to plan one with them together. And it wasn't elaborate. I just wore my play collar, we had some impact play, but it was the intention behind it that changed everything. Even a 10-minute protocol scene can reset the whole tone of your relationship. And here's the thing: you don't even have to wait until you're both feeling it. You can start with service or start with a task. You can even say, I want to play, but I'm tired. Can we do something gentle tonight? I know I've done that. That's still a scene that still counts. So if you're wondering, how do I make time for scenes when life is so busy? Well, here's my answer. You don't need a dungeon, you don't need hours of time, you don't have, you just need a calendar. Write it down or type it in if you do digital and commit to it like any other appointment in your life. Now, habit number two is they're part of the kink community. Now, I hear this all the time, but I'm shy. There's nothing in my area, I don't know where to start. I get it. But if you want to stay connected to this lifestyle, you have to normalize it. You need people around you who speak this language who who get it. Because if your only reference point for DS is Tumblr posts or spicy TikToks, you're only seeing the fantasy, not the real stuff. Um, I remember the first time I went to a munch, I was so nervous. I thought everyone would be super intimidating or clicky or I don't know, fully geared up in latex out of Starbucks or something. But you know what I actually found? I found nerds who are into rope. Like seriously, people who love Star Wars and computers and that can also tie a perfect single column tie. And being around those people gave me permission to be me, not some perfect submissive or DS fantasy, just me. And if your partner isn't into going out to these events, that's okay. Start small. Join online groups, you can join our free group at domsubliving.com/slash community. You can post anonymously if you even want to. Even just lurking in a healthy community can help you feel less alone. Because here's the truth: you can't grow in isolation. The community isn't just about events, it's about seeing yourself reflected back in others. It's about hearing someone else talk about a challenge you thought was just yours. And it's about seeing what healthy DS looks like in practice, not just in theory. Now, habit number three is they use things like maintenance bankings and protocols for emotional safety. So let's talk about maintenance bankings. These aren't punishments, they're not meant to correct behavior or correct fear, they're rituals or anchors in your dynamic. They remind you this is who we are. It resets you. Even if you're a Dom or sub who isn't into impact, you can still create rituals that serve that same function. So things like verbal affirmations, um, kneeling, mantras, um, clothing rules. Besides maintenance bankings, and another thing my Dom likes to do in our dynamic is posture checks. So he'll either have me stand or kneel and he'll check my posture and correct me. So I'm always struggling with making sure my shoulders are back, and so he'll correct me that way, um, having my head down a certain way or my eyes cast down, um, if I'm kneeling, having my knees a certain way, um, or my feet a certain way if I'm standing. And so that is another thing you can do as well, having those posture checks. But I'll tell you a personal story that shows why these reset protocols are so good. So there was a time in my life when I was spiraling, to put it mildly. I was so anxious, I was overworked, I was emotionally and mentally just hanging by a thread. It was a really dark time in my life. And I remember one morning my Dom simply told me to kneel at his feet while he made me coffee. Usually I'm the one that makes his coffee, but he knew I was really struggling. So he told me to kneel right there in the kitchen, and he just went about making coffee like it was no big deal. And that moment, that quiet command to have me kneel, it just grounded me more than any therapy session ever did at that time. Because protocols don't restrict you, they free you to surrender. They're kind of like meditation where you're creating just enough structure to help you soften into your role. And the best part is these rituals become part of your muscle memory, really. Even if your scene play is infrequent because life is happening, these daily or weekly touch points, they just really hold the dynamic in place. So this is why we do weekly maintenance bankings, even if I am being a good obedient sub. They're for both of us, really. Um, regular maintenance bankings or other protocols, they just really remind your body who you are in the relationship, even when your mind is busy with life. Now, habit number four is they have a contract and they review it. Now, hear me out on this one because I can already hear you groaning, but a contract isn't about legality or rigid rules, it's about intentionality. It's a way of saying, here's who we want to be, and let's write it down to make it permanent. And the most important part that successful DS couples do is they don't just write it and forget it, they review it because you change, life changes, kink changes, and your contract should grow with you. I'll never forget our first contract. It had all these rules, including things like bedtime and meals. But six months later, we realized it didn't really fit us anymore. We covered way too much in it, and we were just constantly adding to it that it just didn't make sense anymore. It just wasn't relevant. So we scrapped it and stuck to more of our core principles. And instead of feeling like we failed, that contract review that we did, it really helped us recommit to who we are now. And during those reviews, we always ask, what's been working? What needs to shift? Is there anything you've been afraid to say? Even with a contract in place, consent is ongoing. So, yes, contracts are helpful, but a contract is a map, and maps need updating when the terrain changes. You wouldn't go hiking with a five-year-old map and expect it to show every new trail that has popped up. And you shouldn't expect your first dynamic agreement that you have to match your growth after a year or even six months. So make contracts and reviewing them part of your dynamic. Now, habit number five, they check in when nothing's wrong. Most couples only have deep conversations when something is off, but strong DS relationships check in when things are going well too, because that's when people feel safe enough, to be honest. So ask things like, what's been making you feel connected lately? Is there anything you've been craving more of? Are there any rituals you've outgrown? These questions build trust. They make it easier to bring up new fantasies or to voice unspoken needs you may have. And guess what? They also prevent resentment. You won't wake up one day realizing you've both been silently unhappy for months. So here's a question I want you to reflect on. When was the last time you checked in with your partner just to say what would make this dynamic or are scenes better? And here's the magic of asking when things are good. Your partner won't feel defensive. They're more likely to hear you and to reflect with you and maybe even share something they didn't know how to bring up on their own. These are the check-ins that keep the dynamic alive. Me and my Dom, we do our check-ins once a week on Sundays before he starts the work week. And if you're a member of our All Access Pass, you have access to the exact templates that we use when we do our check-ins. Now we're almost to the end, habit number six, and it's they reflect on their roles separately. This one's easy to overlook, but it is so important. Healthy dominance and submissives don't just grow together, they grow separately too. They do things like journal, they seek out mentors, they think deeply about what leadership or surrender actually means to them. I remember realizing I was showing up to our dynamic kind of halfway. I was tired, distracted, not really feeling submissive, and I blamed my Dom, but it wasn't about him. I hadn't been doing the work, I hadn't been reflecting, I hadn't been connecting to my role. Now, even if you hate journaling, you can try something else. So, like voice notes on your phone, tarot cards, even, meditation. My Dom doesn't like to journal and he prefers to meditate. But ask yourself, what kind of dominant or submissive do I want to be this week? How do I want to show up? Because if you only grow together without ever checking in with yourself, you're you're risking codependence, not connection. And to be honest, partners aren't necessarily forever. They can come and go. Dynamics can change or shift. Even if you're married to your partner, unfortunately, something can happen to them. But the point is when you reflect on your own, something magical happens. Your self-awareness rises, you become a stronger partner, you recognize your triggers, you identify new desires, and you come back into the dynamic, not needy, but full. And that makes everything better. Now, before we get to our final habit, if you need help with any of these, whether it's building a contract, showing up in your role, or connecting with others who get it, that's exactly what our All Access Pass is for. Inside the All Access Pass, you'll get courses, community, coaching, monthly reviews, drop-in support, and all the resources and trainings we've ever made all in one place. But that brings us to habit number seven that keeps DS relationships strong. And that is they invest in their dynamic like it is a way of life. Let me say this clearly. They study, they ask questions, they try new things, they get support and surround themselves with others who get it. They invest. And that's why I created the All Access Pass because I know how easy it is to feel stuck or alone or overwhelmed. You wouldn't expect to be fluent in French without learning the vocabulary and the culture, right? So why expect yourself to master power exchange without support? Investing in your dynamic is not selfish. It's responsible. And the best part is it doesn't have to be overwhelming. You can pick one course, one workbook, one group conversation online, one coaching check-in a month, and that alone can spark huge growth. Small, consistent learning applied over time leads to mastery. That's how real change happens in DS. So those were the seven hidden habits that keep DS relationships strong. Now think about which of these are you already doing and which one could change everything for you if you committed to it just for one month. And again, if you want help with any of these, that's exactly what the All Access Pass is for.
